There are models that clean and charge themselves, a feature that may be essential for those who have children or pets. The top performers in our tests have excellent obstacles to avoid.
1. IRobot Roomba i3+ EVO
The i3+ EVO is identical to its sibling, the i3 EVO. They differ only in that the i3+ comes with self-emptying capabilities. The i3+ is a good option for those who want an automated, hands-free cleaning experience but are willing to manually empty the dust bin when it is full.
Both robots are proficient in removing dirt and dust particles on floors and carpets, and they can easily maneuver around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates intelligent maps of your home, which help the i3+ EVO navigate and clean in a manner that maximizes efficiency. The i3+ does not have the same obstacle avoidance capabilities as the i7+ or other top-rated robots that we test. It could be stuck on power cords and socks, and may have trouble navigating between different surfaces, like hardwood and rug.
iRobot recommends clearing areas where the i3+ EVO will vacuum before you use it, which includes clearing out any toys or clutter it may encounter. It's also an excellent idea to keep the dustbin and filter clean so they do not become blocked by dirt. When the i3+ EVO’s internal bin is empty or the battery is not fully charged, it returns to the docking station, and it automatically takes the dirt out of the docking station’s external dustbin. It then continues cleaning where it began. The i3+ EVO's battery lasts for about an hour and a half continuous use, and it takes around three hours to fully recharge.
2. IRobot Roomba i7+
The iRobot i7+ is an excellent model from iRobot's flagship line and comes with the latest features. It's self-charging, self-navigating and the most important feature of all -- it has an auto-emptying dustbin, which eliminates one of the main sources of maintenance for any robot vacuum.
The Roomba I7+ can better map rooms with Imprint Smart Mapping. It also works with iRobot Home to schedule cleaning tasks, and you can direct your robot using the app or by voice.
In our testing the i7+ performed more agile and faster than our runner-up, the eufy RoboVac G30, and it removed large chunks of pet hair from all surfaces kinds including carpeting. The biggest advantage over the Eufy is the self-emptying bin which removes major maintenance sources and reduces the cost of maintenance.
We were also impressed by the i7+'s integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services which we used to instruct the robot to begin, stop or pause its cleaning sessions and move around the room and sweep an area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ to these services. Once connected, to give voice commands to the i7+, like "Hey Alexa vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options to manage the i7+'s preferences and monitoring its performance.
3. Dyson Cyclone V10
This tiny Dyson model is a sports car in a world of vacuums powered by cordless that resemble minivans and buses. It's powerful and has features to replace a stand-up vacuum for most households, but it also fits nicely on the coffee table or a bookshelf where you can wave it around like the magic device.
The V10 is powered by a seven-cell, energy-dense lithium-ion battery that produces fade-free power for 60 minutes. The sophisticated whole-machine filter system traps allergens, then releases cleaner air into your home. The specialized head uses rigid nylon bristles to penetrate into carpets, and then pick up large crumbs or fine dust. It comes with three suction modes that can be adjusted to the specific task. It quickly converts from handheld vacuum to floor vacuum, and then back to floor.
The model also comes with a dock that charges to 100% in around 3.5 hours, and gives users easy access to two attachments and the wand clip. This is a significant improvement over the older Dysons, which take a long time to charge and are difficult to store.
The main drawback of the V10 is its limited running time. Its claims on the market that it can last up to 60 minutes of running time are not true as CR's tests have shown. This is a typical, not exceptional, battery-powered cordless vacuum's run time. This is still enough to clean most of a home that's average size however, it's not enough to clean every spot (though a second run-through usually will suffice). That's not to say this model doesn't have its advantages: It's lighter and agile than older cordless Dysons, and its vacuuming performance is significantly better on carpets with low pile.
4. iRobot Roomba 694
One of iRobot's most popular robot vacuums The 694 is a basic model that's an excellent option for those who don't want to spend too much money on a robot. It was able to remove all kinds of debris and sizes in our tests and would often go over the same area multiple times to give a thorough clean. Its flat front end helps it to reach into corners and along the edges of walls, which is a nice addition.
Its intelligent navigation system makes use of iAdapt to avoid obstacles and navigate your home, but it isn't equipped with the mapping capability of more sophisticated models like our top selections and the i3+ EVO and j7+ series. Because of this, it can sometimes get stuck on things like phone cords or low furniture, and it often will run out of battery before making it back to its original location.
The Xiaomi Mi robot is superior in many ways to the Roomba 694, as it has fewer components that require regular cleaning, is outfitted with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtration system, incurs lower recurring cost, has more advanced automation abilities and is able to better move its own. It also has a bigger dustbin and charges faster.
The elegant RoboVac X8 is superior to the Roomba 694 for most purposes, as it has a longer battery life, the ability to change its suction power mode manually and comes with physical boundary strips, and can be operated by your phone's voice assistant. It is also more robust, has a more powerful motor, and is more effective on floors with low pile and bare.
5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+
Samsung is a brand is found on all kinds of electronic gadgets for your home It's no surprise that they're also one of the most reputable robot vacuum and mop manufacturers. Their Jet Bot AI+ is loaded with cutting-edge onboard intelligence tech for navigation and obstacle avoidance.
The app provides a range of options to customize your robotic cleaner. These include virtual barriers, mopping levels and behavior adjustments, docking frequency settings and more. It's easy to comprehend and is user-friendly, which is the case with other Samsung devices.
In our tests in our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ performed well on hard floors, and cleaned up 86 percent of dog hair (on carpet). It did not do well in avoiding taller items like socks or cords. This was disappointing. It's also more expensive than the other models we tested, which might be a problem for some buyers.

The app also makes it simple to manually steer the robot in the event of need. For example my living room rug has a darkly-colored border that can cause confusion for other robots I've tested. The HRV 425BL, however continued to travel across the border without registering the high point. Also, the ability to set up a weekly cleaning schedule is a wonderful time-saving benefit.
